پلانکي هم کړی دی

د یوې مرکې پر مهال مو د افغانستان په جنوب کې د جګړه مارانو د یو قوماندان نه پوښتنه وکړه چې په بریدونو کې ملکي خلک ولې وژني. ډېر په غوصه یې ځواب راکړ: "امریکایان خو هم ملکیان وژني تاسو ژورنالستان هغوی ته ولې نه وایئ؟"

که د کرزي صیب نه دې پوښتنه وکړه چې دولت او کورنۍ دې تر غوږونو په فساد او نورو غیر قانوني فعالیتونو کې ډوب شوي دي، نو وايي: "بالا نو دا خارجیانو خو هم شه فساد کړی دی."

که د معارف وزیر ته ووایې چې په وزارت کې دې د رشوت بازار تود دی، نو وايي "رشوت خو د عدلیې وزارت کې هم شته."

که د سیاف نه پوښتنه وکړې چې د جهاد په دوره کې دې بې ګناه خلک ولې قتل کړي، نو ځواب درکوي چې "دا خو د خدای خوښه وه، یواځې ما نه دي کړي ټولو جهادیانو کړي دي."

که د حکمتیار نه وپوښتې چې دا د ايي ایس ايي جهاد به تر کومه کوې، نو په بې شرمۍ وايي: "یواځې زه خو یې نه کوم ملا عمر یې هم کوي."

که د یو قاتل نه پوښتنه وکړې چې قتل دې ولې کړی، نو تندی به درته تریو کړي او وبه وايي، "نو یواځې زه خو قاتل نه یم پلانکي هم قتل کړی دی."

که یو بېخي عادي سړی لګیا و په سرک کې یې کنده ویستله او ورته ودې ویل چې دا د ضرر کار ولې کوې، ځواب درکوي چې "ټول سرکونه خلکو کندې کړې دي هغوی ته دې نه پام کېږي یواځې ماته دې پام دی."

یو پیاوړی شرعي دلیل او لایسنس د هر چا سره په لاس کې دی چې که زه څه غلط کار کوم نو هیڅ ملامت نه یم ځکه چې پلانکي هم کړی دی او یا یې کوي.

په یوه داسې ټولنه کې چې نږدې هر فرد یې د مذهب په ډنډ کې ځان تر غوږونو ډوب کړی دی او دې ډوبېدو ته د سپڅلتیا نامه ورکوي او د دغې "سپېڅلتیا" په بنیاد د ځان د ښه انسان، د بهتر فکر او عقل د خاوند ادعا کوي، هیڅ یو فرد د خپل جرم یا غلطۍ ځواب داسې نه درکوي چې ووایي "غلطي مې کړې ده، باید داسې کار ونکړو." د دې په ځای یې تل ځواب دا وي چې که پلانکي کړی دی نو زه یې هم د کولو حق لرم.

او ذهنیت بیا داسې چې د "پلانکي هم کړی دی" کولتور یواځې په مجرمانه کارونو او فعالیتونو کې موجود دی. که چیرې خبره د یو مثبت فعالیت شوه، یو داسې کار چې هغه د هېواد او ولس لپاره تلپاتې ګټه ولري، یو داسې کار چې دوی د بهتر انساني تمدن په لور بوځي، یو داسې عمل چې د هغې په نتیجه کې علمي کولتور جوړېږي، چې هغه د یو ارام او هوسا ژوند پیلامه کولی شي، چې هغه د یو ازاد فکر او روان پرمختګ لار پرانیزي، چې د یوې داسې ټولنې لپاره وي چې انسان او انساني فکر پکې بقا ولري، نو هلته بیا هر تن فکر کوي چې یره هغه بل دې وکړي، زما به پکې یا ایمان ته زیان ورسي یا ځان ته. خو په دې به څنګه پوهېږي چې په کومو حالاتو کې ژوند کوي په دې کې خو یې ایمان او ځان دواړه د لاسه ورکړي دي یا ورکولو والا دی!

په فلسطین کې ظلم کېږي. او په شعبه بازار کې؟

سهار شاوخوا اوه بجې وې. د پېښور د خېبر بازار ترڅنګ شعبه بازار کې خال خال دوکانونه پرانستي، ځینې د پرانستل کېدو په حال کې خو زیاتره لا هم بند وو. ځای په ځای د ځینو دوکانونو مخې ته ټولی ټولی خلک ناست وو د سرک په غاړه ناست وریجو والا نه یې وریجې خوړلې یا "پانچو والا" نه پانچې. خو د یو دوکان مخې ته یو سړي د اوو یا اتو کلونو یو ماشوم راایسار کړی او په زوره زوره یې وهلو. د سړي او ماشوم دواړو د کالیو او وضعې نه مالومېده چې غربت وهلي او حالاتو ځپلي دي خو دا خبره نه د وهونکي سړي د وهلو او نه د ماشوم د چیغو نه مالومېده چې ولې یې وهي. په وریجو او پانچو اخته خلکو نه به یواځې څو تنو کله کله مخ ورواړاوه خو بېرته به زر په خپل خوراک اخته شول. یواځې یو سړی پاڅېد او ورغی. د ماشوم وهونکي نه یې پوښتنه وکړه: "وه وروره، دا ماشوم ولې وهې؟"

د ماشوم وهونکي سړي ورته برګ برګ وکاته او ځواب یې ورکړ: "خپل ځوي مې دی که وهم یې که هر څه پرې کوم، ځه خپله لاره وهه." "خپل ځوي مې دی" یې په داسې انداز وویل لکه ځوي چې څپلۍ یا بې کاره لرګی وي چې څه وخت دې خوښه شوه یو ګوټ ته یې ګوزار کړه، چې څه وخت دې خوښه شوه د ځمکې یې ووله، او چې څه وخت دې خوښه شوه په اور پسې یې کړه. پوښتنه کوونکی سړی هم لکه چې د دې ځواب نه مطمین شو نو نور یې هیڅ ونه ویل، څادر ته یې شړک ورکړ او خپله لاره یې ووهله.

زه او ملګری مې هم هلته د پانچو خوړلو له تللي وو خو د ماشوم د حالت په لیدلو مو پانچې هېرې شوې، د سړک په غاړه ودرېدو او خپل زړونه مو خوړل. لږ ساعت وروسته د وریجو نه راتاو پېنډې نه یو غټ پټ سړی چې د کړه وړه نه د شعبه بازار د غټ جومات امام ښکارېده او د چلند نه یې مالومېده چې د وریجو او پانچو والا نه د خپلې خېټې قلنګ غونډوي راپاڅېد او د ویشتلې هوسې په څېر راغونډ شوي او ترهېدلي ماشوم په لور ورغی. د ماشوم نه څو قدمه لیرې ودرېد، یو ځل یې ماشوم، بیا یې ورله پلار ته وکاته، بیا یې لومړی په اوږده ږیره او بیا د ږیرې نه سمدستي لاندې شروع کېدونکې خېټه باندې لاس راښکلو او سړي ته یې وویل: "جومات ته یې راولېږه که د الله خوښه وه سم به شي." او مخکې له دې چې د سړي هو یا نه ځواب ته غوږ شي، مخ یې د جومات په لور کړ او د پړسېدلې هیلۍ په څېر ټالۍ ټالۍ روان شو.

بالاخر زمونږ صبر ونشو، ورغلو، سړي ته مو وویل: "ماما دا ماشوم پرېږده، دا څه کوې؟"

سړي په هماغه "ځوي مې خپل دی" انداز ځواب راکړ: "ځئ وروره زما په کار کې کار مه لرئ." مونږ د ماشوم وهلو او ژړا دومره ځورولي وو چې غوښتل مو په کار کې یې کار ولرو نو لږ ورته رابرګ شو. هغه هم پوه شو نو ماشوم له یې یوه اخري لغته ورکړه او ترې اخوا شو. مونږ د ماشوم څنګ ته کېناستو چې پوښتنه ترې وکړو خو هغه سر په زنګنونو کې ومنډه او نرۍ نرۍ سلګۍ وهل یې شروع کړل. څو لمحې وروسته ترې پاڅېدو او د سړک بل طرف ته د یو دوکان مخې ته کېناستو چې په ماشوم نظر وساتو. تر څو چې مونږ هلته ناست وو ماشوم هماغسې سر په زنګون کې منډلی او سړی یې خوا ته تاوېده راتاوېده خو بیا یې پرې کار ونلرو.

کله چې ښه ناوخته ټول دوکانونه پرانستل شوي، د موټرو تګ راتګ زیات شوی و او مونږ غوښتل چې لاړ شو نو د شعبه بازار د بر سر نه یو جلوس راښکاره شو چې مخ یې د خېبر بازار په لور و. په جلوس کې د خلکو د نارو، بېرغونو او چلند نه مالومېده چې د کومې یوې یا زیاتو مذهبي ډلو لخوا تنظیم شوی دی. د اکثریت خلکو نارې هماغه مالومې او پېژندل شوې نارې وې چې زیاتره مذهبي ډلې یې ورکوي. یانې "امریکا مرده باد"، "اسراییل مرده باد"، "هندوستان مرده باد"، "اسلامي امت زنده باد"، "فلسطین"، "کشمیر" او داسې نور.

جلوس چې په شعبه بازار کې زمونږ مخې ته تېرېده نو یو شمېر ګډون کوونکیو یې سر په زنګون کې منډلي ماشوم باندې پښې هم کېښودې خو د زنده باد او مرده باد په نارو کې ډوبو جلوسیانو نشه دومره سر ته ختلې وه چې په زرګونو میله لیرې اسراییل او فلسطین ورته ښکارېدل خو د پښو لاندې ماشوم باندې یې نظر نه لګېده. ملګري مې مانه پوښتنه وکړه: "یره دا اسلامي امت څه ته وايي؟"

ما ورته تشریح کړه: "د عربو په قبایلي ټولنه کې ډېر د پخوا نه د یو بل د وژلو او چور کولو یو کولتور موجود و. په اومه پېړۍ کې یو شمېر جنګسالارانو او قوماندانانو دغه قبایلي کولتور ته د مذهب جامه ورواغوستله او د اسلامي امت نوم یې ورکړ. له هغې راوروسته چې د نړۍ په هر سر او ګوټ کې دیکتاتوران، جنګسالاران او قوماندانان د خلکو او یا د یو بل په وژلو او چور کولو اخته وي هغوی ته اسلامي امت وايي. په افغانستان کې ورته اسلامي ورورولي وايي. د دوی د اسلامي امت په دغه تصور کې په زرګونو میله لیرې هغه فلسطین ځاییږي چې د دې جلوس نوي فیصده ګډون کوونکیو ته مالومه نه ده چې په کوم ځای کې پروت دی او خلک یې کومه ژبه وايي، خو په یو څپق کې د دوی د پښو لاندې ماشوم پکې نه ځا..."

"ډُوزززززززززز غرببببببب!" مخکې د دې نه چې ما خپله خبره بشپړه کړې وای د خېبر بازار د لوري نه د درنې چاودنې غږ راغی. مونږ سمدستي ودرېدو. د بازار په سر یوه غټه لُوخړه پورته شوه. موټرې ودرېدې، خلکو اخوا دېخوا منډې شروع کړې. زما ملګري وویل: "لکه چې دهماکه وشوه. ته ځه چې ورشو."

ما ځواب ورکړ: "دا اسلامي ورورولي ده، زما او ستا پکې کار نشته. ځه چې خپله لاره وهو."

Afghan police abuse not in prisons, but in public

Just a few days ago a member of the Karzai-led mafia in Afghanistan rejected a United Nations report about systematic torture in Afghan prisons. As the torture inside prisons occurs mainly during investigations and is hard to prove because the Afghan Intelligence will never allow anyone to film it. However, a video posted on facebook shows how the police abuse and humiliate Afghan citizens in public.

The eight-minute video, apparently recorded by a police officer whom the abused person (the one in the ladies dress) calls ‘sir’, shows that a group of policemen have arrested two men one of whom wears a wig, a black burqa and underneath it a red women's dress. At least three of the policemen, armed with weapons in one hand and with cameras in the other, and continuously laughing and using abusive language, order him to remove his wig, the burqa and his other belongings, and film every detail. Then they order him to wear everything back so the policemen can film how he ‘makes’ himself.

The poor man in the women's dress, clearly embarrassed and afraid, continuously begs in Dari language: ‘Don’t do this to me sir, don’t film me sir. Why are you humiliating me sir?’ The suffering from the humiliation is very clear on his innocent face. But the ‘sir’, instead of showing any mercy, continues to make fun of him and orders him to hurry up and do what he says otherwise ‘I will beat you so hard that you will remember.’ When the police officer asks him where he was arrested, he says: ‘From the market of Maryam High School’, in Kabul. To the officer’s question why he dressed himself as a woman, he replies that they were buying some clothes in the market and wanted to do some entertainment. Using very foul language, the officer accuses him for prostitution.

It is no longer a secret that the Afghan government, from Karzai to the lowest rank policeman, is so corrupt, so incompetent and so unprofessional that the Afghan people are once again forced into the corner of hopelessness from where they have only limited options: to flee the country or to join the insurgent groups. Using their weapons and power to abuse and humiliate people the way showed in this video and that only because the man wears a ladies dress for some entertainment, was considered only a pre-2001 phenomenon when the religious police of the Taliban used schools as torture centers. Now, if the police do this to entertainers in public, what happens inside prisons and torture centers can only be imagined.

The strangest thing is that the Afghan police were able to arrest this man so easily despite the fact that he had done his best to pass himself as a perfect woman (a wig, a burqa, a beautiful red dress, lipstick, fake breasts, a beautiful handbag, clean shave, etc.), while those terrorists who only wear a burqa and an unfitting ladies dress (with a long beard, no fake breasts, no lipstick and often heavily armed) mostly evade the police attention and reach their target.

The use of burqa by men is not unusual in Afghanistan (and the neighboring countries). Terrorists use it for terrorist activities (like suicide bombing, group attacks, transferring weapons and explosives, escapes), criminals use it to achieve their own goals, and men who provide entertainment use it to reach their fans and audience, particularly when the kind of entertainment they provide is legally forbidden or culturally considered a shame. The man in this video belongs to the last group. Why people are forced to go for entertainment in burqa while living in a democracy is a question, but why the state police abuse them is a concern. This attitude of the state police must be strongly condemned and immediately stopped.

The video

The man's, who has dressed himself as a woman, pleas not to be filmed are understandable. He could be recognized and targeted by extremist groups if the video went on the internet or any other media. That has happened, the video is widely shared on facebook as 'public', accessible at this link.

Besides that, he may have been afraid that the video could be used to blackmail him or shame him in the community. The person who posted this video on facebook could be one of the policemen who filmed him, which is, if true, appallingly unethical, unprofessional and irresponsible.

پښتون او شرم

هغه وخت مونږ په باجوړ کې اوسېدو چې زه مې د پلار په دوکان کې ناست وم او یو مېلمه راغی. مشر سړی و. پوښتنه یې رانه وکړه: "دا دوکان د چا دی؟"

د خپل پلار نوم مې ورته یاد کړ چې د هغه دی. مېلمه سمدستي لمبه غوندې شو، رنګ یې بدل شو او د ډېر قهر نه یې لاړې وتُوکلې. بیا یې وویل: "ته خو ما مخکې نه وې لیدلی، چیرته دې وخت تېر کړی چې دومره بې شرمه شوی یې؟"

زه پوه شوم چې د هغه مطلب څه او غوصه یې د څه لپاره وه. ما باید د خپل پلار نوم نه وای یاد کړی. د یو پښتون ماشوم لپاره د خپل پلار نوم یادول شرم دی، د مور نوم په خوله راوړل خو نه تصور کېدونکی شرم.

همدغسې د ښځې لپاره د خپل خاوند او خاوند لپاره د خپلې ښځې نوم یادول شرم دی. هغه ټوکه خو به مو اورېدلې وي چې د یوې ښځې د خاوند نوم رحمت الله و، نو چې کله به یې لمونځ پای ته ورساوه او سلام به یې اړوه، د رحمت الله په ځای یې پکې د خپل ځوي نوم یاداوه: "السلام علیکم د عزیزالله پلاره، السلام علیکم د عزیزالله پلاره."

ایا کله مو فکر کړی چې پښتون په خپل ورځني ژوند کې د څومره شرمونو سره مخ دی؟

که مو د څو دقیقو لپاره فکر وکړ ښايي درته معلومه شي چې پښتون اصلاً د شرم نه جوړ شوی دی.

· او ان تر دې چې د ځینو خلکو لپاره بې نسوارو کېدل هم شرم دی

له زېږونه تر مرګه د پښتون ژوند د شرم په دایره کې چورلي - ګوټ پېر په ګوټ پېر د شرمونو دامونه خواره دي چې پښتون یې پکې د هر څانګ نه ګېر کړی دی – دا د پښتون شرم، دا د پښتو شرم، او دا یې د پښتونولۍ شرم.

دې دومره ډېرو شرمونو پښتون او پښتانه بې حده بې سرحده شرمولي خو په دې اړه خبره کول هم شرم دی.

خو هغه اعمال چې شرمېدل پرې پکار دي د پښتنو د شرمونو په بوجۍ کې نشته. یو څو ترې دا دي:

· ګرده نړۍ کې خلک په دې شرمېږي چې بې علمه او وروسته پاتې شي خو پښتون پرې ویاړي

· ګرده نړۍ کې هغه کلی او سیمه شرمېږي چې ښوونځی او روغتون ونلري خو پښتون د خپلې سیمې ښوونځی او روغتون په خپله سوځوي او ورانوي

· د نړۍ تمام خلک د خپل هنر په نه درناوي شرمېږي خو پښتانه په بې شرمۍ خپل هنر له منځه وړي

· د نړۍ قامونه چې کوم تاریخي اثر پېدا کړي نو اوږد تحقیق پرې وکړي بیا ځان یوې نتیجې ته ورسوي، پښتانه چې خپل تاریخ په راکټونو وولي نو چیغه کړي چې مونږ تاریخ لرو

· د نړۍ نور خلک کوښښ کوي ښځې د ژوند په ټولو چارو کې شریکې کړي چې د ژوند منډه اسانه او ښکلې شي پښتانه یې په بې شرمۍ خرڅوي او د ګډو ووزو په څېر یې له یو بل سره بدلوي رابدلوي

· د نړۍ خلک ژوند د قانون له مخې او رابطې په ژبو کوي؛ پښتانه ژوند په ژبه (پښتو) او رابطې په بې قانونۍ کوي

· د نړۍ خلک کوښښ کوي چې خپل مذهبونه د خپلو قومي او سیاسي ګټو لپاره وکاروي، پښتانه د نورو مذهبونه د خپل قوم او سیاسي ګټو د له منځه وړلو لپاره کاروي

او بیا هم هر څوک سینه ډبوي او په دې ویاړي چې پښتون دی.

زما په فکر د ویاړ ځای به هغه وي چې پښتون د دې غیر نورمال حالت نه راووځي، په ځان او خپله ټولنه کې د بدلون فکر وکړي او د یو نورمال انسان په څېر ژوند جوړ کړي. هله به ملت، وطن او ټولنه هم جوړه شي.

که هو نو تا د یو بهتر ټولنیز ژوند په لور یو قدم اخیستی دی.

که نه نو تا له شرم پکار دی!

کله چې ما په لومړي ځل د خپلې نیا د کور نه بهر په خیرنه او کږه وږه کوڅه کې د ټیټو کورونو ترمنځ قدم کېښود نو د ګاونډ ماشومان راغونډ شول او په زوره زوره یې چیغې کړې "سینایت، د بکسې ماشومه!، او "هغه ده د بکسې ماشومه."

ماشومانو دغه چیغې په زوره زوره وهلې او زه له ډاره راغونډېدم، خو زما په څېر هغوی هم نه وو خبر چې "د بکسې ماشومه" څه مانا! په دې اړه هغوی هماغه عادي خبرې تکرارولې چې د خپلو مشرانو نه یې اورېدلې وې. خو زه یو څه موده وروسته پوهه شوم چې خلکو ماته د بکسې ماشومه ولې ویله.

په دې توګه یې د هرې ورځې په څېر راته کالي واغوستل، په یوه بکس کې یې واچولم او د بکس سر یې بند کړ. وروسته یې بکس د کټ لاندې کړ او ښار ته لاړه. یوې ګاونډۍ ښځې زما کریکې اورېدلې وې او حیرانه شوې وه چې مور مې ولې غم نه خوري. بیا راپسې کور ته راننوتې وه؛ زما ژړا یې اورېدله خو موندلی یې نه شوم. فکر یې کړی و چې څه زړه بوږنوونکې پېښه شوې ده نو په چیغو نارو د سرک د پاسه د پولیسو پوستې ته ورغلې وه. پولیسو لومړی زمونږ کور ته د راتګ نه انکار کړی و ځکه چې هغوی په رمباړو اخته ګاونډۍ باندې د لېونۍ ګومان کړی و. خو وروسته راغلي وو او زه یې د هغې بندې بکسې نه راایستلې ووم چې مور مې د خپل کټ لاندې پریښی و.

تر ټولو زیات خوند د برانډې په لوبو کې و. د برانډې په ستنو پورې به مو هغه بالونه غوټه کړل چې په خپله به مو له چیرړیو جوړ کړي وو او بیا به مو ورته سُوکان او لغتې ونیولې. په ساعتونو ساعتونو او بې مداخلې به مونږ دغه بالونه ګډول. بال به اخوا لاړ، په تارونو به بېرته راښکل شو، بله څپېړه به یې وخوړه، بیا به لاړ، بېرته به راغی، بیا څپېړه... او دغسې به نیمه ورځ لاړه.

د هګۍ غل

په بوتل کې مړی

په یتیم خانه کې زه د لومړي ځل لپاره د مړي سره مخ شوم. د هیلن په نامه هغې جلۍ عمر دومره و چې ښوونځي ته تللی شوه، او ظاهراً له ما مشره وه، خو ما بیا هم له هغې سره ډېر وخت تېراوه. هغه د سترې ودانۍ په هغه روغتون کې بستر وه چې زمونږ د اوسېدو د خونو ترڅنګ و. مونږ روغتون ته هر وخت ورتللی شو ځکه چې زمونږ د ډوډۍ خوړلو تالار هماغلته و – کوټې یواځې د ویده کېدو لپاره وې. هیلن په یو غټ کټ کې بستر وه چې مخې ته یې یوه جیګه ستن ولاړه وه. ستنې ته یو بوتل رازوړند و چې په یوه نلکه کې ترې جلۍ ته د اوبو څاڅکي ورتلل. هر څه چې وو خو د اوبو په څېر ښکارېدل. دغه بوتل او نلکه زما لپاره په زړه پورې وو او تل مې ورته په حیرانۍ کاته چې څنګه یو څاڅکي په بل پسې په نل کې حرکت کاوه.

سبا سهار وختي ورغلم چې هیلن ووینم. زه ایله برانډې ته ورننوتې وم چې چا هغه د خپلې کوټې نه بېرون راوړله. زه حیرانه شومه چې هغه ویده وه او کراره پرته وه او بستره یې په وینو ککړه وه. په وینو ککړه بستره ډېره ډاروونکې ښکارېده. زه په دې هر څه هیڅ نه پوهېدم نو په ژړا شوم. نه پوهېدم چې په هیلن څه شوي وو، یواځې د دغې وضعیت فشار مې احساساوه. بیا یو چا وویل چې هیلن مړه شوې ده.

د همدغې لمحې نه زما د نرسانو نه نفرت شو، د هغو ټولو نرسانو نه چې د روغتون په کوڅو کې به سستې سستې اوړېدې راوړېدې او هیڅ کار یې په لېوالتیا نه کاوه. ماته معلومه نه وه چې باید چاته مې دا خبره په باور کړې وای چې نرسانو ته ما ویلي وو خو هغوی پرې عکس العمل نه و ښودلی. وروسته ما د ماشومانو پالونکیو ته دا خبره وکړه خو ګومان نه کوم چې هغوی به څه کړي وي ځکه چې نرسانو هماغسې کار کاوه لکه هیڅ چې نه وي پېښ شوي.

مونږ د یتیم خانې ماشومانو ډېرې ورځې د دغه مړي لپاره یوه داسې سندره ویله چې مونږ په خپله جوړه کړې وه. مونږ د هغې د خښولو نقل کاوه، یوه نانځکه به مو خښه کړه او خپله سندره به مو له خښولو وړاندې، د خښولو په وخت او وروسته له خښولو ورته ویله. هر چا به ژړل، خو ما نه شول. په دغې وجه یوې بلې جلۍ زه ووهلم. ما نه غوښتل د چا سره سر وجنګوم خو بس ژړلی مې نه شول. داسې احساس مې کاوه لکه هر څه چې راپکې درېدلي وي: اوښکې مې نه وې، او ساه مې هم بندېدله. هغه بله جلۍ په دې غوصه شوه او تر هغې یې وهلم چې د درد او تکلیف نه په چیغو شوم.

کله چې وروسته مې یوه ورځ دغې جلۍ سره په باغیچه کې لوبې کولې نو هغې یوه د سکې روپۍ تېره کړه. بیا په چیغو او له ډاره په وارخطایۍ لاړم چې یوه نرسه راولم. دا ځل راسره یوه راغله، خو ډېر ناوخته شوی و – د هغې ساه بنده شوې وه. دغه زما د مرګ سره دویمه تجربه وه.

د دغې جلۍ د مړینې نه زه د هیلن مړینې زیاته غمجنه کړې وم. ما غوښتل چې هغې د سیروم په وجه مړې شوې جلۍ بدل واخلم. د دې لپاره زه د یو ډبي اوبو سره د روغتون د تي د ماشومانو برخې ته ورغلم – هماغلته هغو نرسانو کار کاوه چې ما ترې د هیلن د کتلو غوښتنه کړې وه خو هغوی راسره نه وې راغلې – د ماشومانو د کټونو د کتار سره وګرځېدم او ګېرچاپېر مې اوبه واړولې: د کټونو څنګ کې د ماشومانو په پرتوګونو، د هغوی په کالیو، او د هغوی په کټونو. نرسانې بیا په ساعتونو ساعتونو لګیا وې دغه ځایونه یې بېرته پاکول او وچول.

په دویم ځل چې ورغلم یوې نرسې ونیولم او ښې کلکې څپېړې یې راکړې. له هغې وروسته مې بیا د ماشومانو هغې برخې ته د ورتګ زړه نه دی کړی.

د ماشومانو په دغې یتیم خانه کې اصلاً څپېړې دومره بدې نه وې څومره چې هغه څه چې باغوان له ما سره کول. د یتیم خانې شاته یو د ګنو پټی و. هلته زه تل د باغوان – چې یو بوډا او پېړ سړی و او د هر چا ترې کرکه کېده – سره لېږل کېدم. کله چې به مونږ هلته په پټي کې وو نو هغه به ماته ویل: "کمیس دې جیګ کړه." ما به کمیس جیګ کړ او تمه مې کوله چې څپېړه به راکوي خو هغه به فقط خپل لاس کله په ځان او کله ما پورې سُولولو.

کله کله یې رانه غوښتنه کوله چې په ځمکه کېنم او که هغه به په ځمکه ناست و نو بیا یې راته ویل چې په غېږ کې یې کېنم. زه یواځینۍ تنه نه وم چې له هغه سره پټي ته لېږل کېدم. ډېر ځل به ورسره په یو وخت ډېرې جلکیانې لېږل کېدلې. دا خبره مو باید پټه ساتلې وای. هغه به راته هر وخت ویل چې باید چاته ونه وایو. زه تر نن ورځې پورې نه پوهېږم چې هغه تر کومه حده تللو. که زه په دغې اړه فکر وکړم نو هر څه په یوه توره خړه کې بدل شي.

موروپلار او یتیمان

وخت په وخت به ما لیدل چې ځینې ماشومان به د داسې بالغانو لخوا وړل کېدل چې په ځانګړې توګه به په دغو ماشومانو پسې راغلي وو. دغو بالغانو به یو مخصوص ماشوم لټاوه او همدغه یو ماشوم ته به یې غاړه ورکوله. هغوی د "خویندو" په څېر د کوټو په ډېرو کټونو نه ګرځېدل، او نه یې په بېلابېلو ځایونو نظر اچاوه، بلکې د مطلب پر بنسټ یو خاص ماشوم ته ورتلل، هغه یې له ځانه سره اخیسته او بېرته بېرون وتل، هغې نړۍ ته چې د بهرنۍ دروازې نه بهر وه. دغلته بهر یوه نه ختمېدونکې صحرا وه، په کومه کې چې کوم ماشوم په خپل سر نه شو تللی بالکې د چا بالغ سره باید تللی وای. په هغې کې باید د هغو بالغانو سره تللی وای چې د یو خاص ماشوم لپاره راتلل.

په کرار کرار ماته معلومه شوه چې ډېر ماشومان د یتیم خانې نه چا نه بوتلل ځکه چې هغوی هیڅوک نه لرل. هغه ماشومان چې هلته په کوټو کې ویده کېدل د تل لپاره هلته وو، په داسې حال کې چې کوم ماشومان په روغتون کې وو هغوی هلته د یو څو اونیو یا میاشتو لپاره وو. ما به فکر کاوه چې زمونږ او هغوی ترمنځ به څه توپیر وي، د هغو ماشومانو ترمنځ چې تلل او د هغوی تر څنګ چې پاتې کېدل. وروسته له هغې چې دومره زړه مې وکړ چې د یوې "خور" نه په دې اړه پوښتنه وکړم، هغې راته وویل: "دا خو اسانه خبره ده. په روغتون کې چې کوم ماشومان دي هغوی موروپلار لري، خو تاسو یې نه لرئ. تاسو یتیمان یئ."

یتیمان او موروپلار. نو دغو دوو تورو د یو ماشوم برخلیک ټاکه، چې لاړ شي او که پاتې شي، چې نېکمرغه دی که بدبخته. دا څنګه خبره ده چې ځینې ماشومان یتیمان دي او ځینې نه؟ د دې خبرې ځواب نه و، فقط د څه کمي یو بوږنوونکی احساس و. هر ځل چې به نور ماشومان وتل او خپل موروپلار ته به تلل او زه به پاتې کېدلم نو دا ما لپاره یوه څپېړه وه.

هغه ورځ هم راغله چې زه د یتیم خانې نه بوتلل شوم – توپیر فقط دا و چې زما مور او پلار نه بلکې دوه سړي چې درېشیانې یې اغوستې وې راپسې راغلي وو. هغوی په جلتۍ کې وو او ماته یې دومره وخت رانکړ چې مخه ښه واخلم.

ما ناڅاپه دا ارمان هم په سختۍ وکړ چې مور او پلار ته مې لاړه شم. خو طبعاُ په دې پوهېدم چې زما پلار په دغو سړو کې نه و، ځکه هغوی زه د دې وړ نه ګڼلم چې مخ ته مې وګوري. خو بیا هم کله چې مونږ په موټر کې سپرېدو نو زما هیله وه چې مور او پلار ته مې وړي. ما دا هیله هم لرله چې اوږد سفر به وي ځکه ما غوښتل چې هغه صحرا، غرونه او مېدان ووینم چې یواځې مې د برانډې نه پېژندل.

خو موټر په مېدان نه بلکې په ښار ورغی. بیا هم ما په دغه سفر کې هر څه ته کاته: ځکه زه تر دغه وخته د یتیم خانې نه بېرون نه ووم وتلې او اوس مې دغومره خلک، کورونه، کوڅې، څلورلارې، ستنې او ټرکونه لیدل. ما دا هر څه له دروازې نه بلکې له بېخي نږدې لیدل، هر څه رانه فقط یو لاس لیرې وو، او زه یې په مینځ کې وم. زه د کړکۍ لوري ته جوخته ناسته وم او د هغې نړۍ ننداره مې کوله چې تراوسه مې نه وه لیدلې.

خو دا ننداره ډېره اوږده نه وه. څو دقیقې وروسته موټر په یوه غټه دروازه ننوت او ما هماغه څه ولیدل چې له مخکې مې پېژندل: یو دېوال، یو باغ، یو غټ کور، ډېر ماشومان، "خویندې" او یوه غټه دروازه چې په بهرنۍ نړۍ پسې بندېدله. دا کور له هغه کوره چې زه پکې تر دغه وخته اوسېدلې وم زیات ستر، ښایسته او زوړ و. دا د تیږو نه جوړ و او برجونه او بلۍ یې هم لرلې – او دا هغه شیان وو چې ما مخکې نه وو لیدلي. یو ټاور هم پکې ولاړ و چې یو ساعت پکې لګېدلی و او کله کله به یې ټک ټک کاوه. خو دغو شیانو سره اوس زما علاقه نه وه. ما یواځې مخامخ دېوال لیدلو: چې دومره جیګ و چې یو بالغ سړی پرې نه شو اوړېدلی. دغه دېوال د یتیم خانې تر دېوال ډېر جیګ او بیا د تیږو هم. دا یو داسې دېوال و چې هر لوری یې بند کړی و، زما نظر چې د لیرې صحرا د لیدلو عادي شوی و اوس یې دې دېوال مخه نیولې وه – یواځې پورته دې کتلی شول، اسمان ته.

Nederlands leren: een leuke ervaring

Een nieuwe en vreemde taal leren is altijd moeilijk, vooral wanneer de vreemde taal van een helemaal andere taalfamilie is. Mijn moedertaal is Pashto – een taal gesproken door mensen in sommige provincies van Afghanistan en Pakistan -, dus het leren van Urdu, Perzisch en Arabisch was makkelijker voor mij dan de Westerse talen zoals Frans, Duits of Spaans.

Engels is misschien een uitzondering; mensen in de hele wereld ofwel spreken Engels of streven ernaar die taal te leren. Arabisch had ik geleerd toen ik een kind was, maar het meeste daarvan ben ik nu vergeten. Urdu en enigszins Perzisch heb ik later geleerd en spreek ik nog heel goed.

Engels leerde ik ongeveer vijf jaar geleden. Helemaal door zelfstudie. Ik ben ontzettend blij dat ik het Engels heb geleerd. In werkelijkheid, in het bijzonder voor mensen die in Azié en het Midden-Oosten wonen, is Engels de deur naar kennis en wereldkennen. Voor mij, en misschien ook voor veel andere mensen, is het nu een groot voordeel.

Dit voordeel kan ik in twee punten beschrijven: het eerste is dat toen ik naar Nederland kwam, ik ontdekte dat iedereen hier goed Engels spreekt. Dit maakt Nederland aantrekkelijker voor internationale mensen en hun activiteiten. Het tweede punt is belangrijker: Nederlands heeft hetzelfde alfabet als Engels en veel Engelse woorden zijn vernederlandst en worden in alledaagse gesprekken gebruikt.

Het is nu ongeveer vijf maanden dat ik Nederlands aan het leren ben. In het begin dacht ik dat ik Nederlands makkelijk zou vinden. Maar later ontdekte ik dat het niet zo was. In het bijzonder is de woordvolgorde soms heel moeilijk terwijl het bepaald lidwoord (de / het) en relatieve pronomen (daaraan, daarover, daarmee, waarmee, enzovoort) ook lastig zijn.

Toch is het een heel leuke ervaring, moet ik zeggen.

Behalve de dingen die ik van mijn heel aardige en vriendelijke Nederlandse vrienden geleerd heb, heb ik twee intensieve cursussen op de universiteit gevolgd. Het hoofddoel van iets leren is natuurlijk kennis vergaren. Maar plezier is ook een deel van leren, dat wil zeggen, als je in groepen met andere mensen (die uit verschillende landen en culturen komen, verschillende talen spreken en Nederlandse woorden in verschillende, soms grappige, manieren uitspreken) zit, leert en oefent, dan zie en ervaar je hoe die andere mensen denken en leren; en dus kan je op die manier je eigen aanpak met die van hen vergelijken.

Ook komt het vaak in deze groepen voor dat sommige cursisten grappige en gekke dingen zeggen. Bijvoorbeeld een Bengaals echtpaar drong aan dat hun land 6 jaargetijden heeft; een Thais meisje dat een zin met ‘bijten’ in perfectum moest maken, zei: ‘ik heb een hond gebeten’; een Arabische man die het spreekwoord ‘men moet een gegeven paard niet in de bek kijken’ letterlijk begreep en zei: ‘misschien een paard niet, maar een kameel wel’. En de docent stond helemaal perplexed toen een Afghaanse vrouw stijfkoppig weigerde het woord ‘keer’ uit te spreken. Maar toen ik hem na de les vertelde dat ‘keer’ in Dari (Perzisch) ‘penis’ betekent, zei hij: ‘Potverdomme, dit is het gekste dat ik ooit gehoord heb.’

Omdat leren mijn passie is, en Nederlands wil ik graag zo snel en perfect mogelijk leren, lees ik ook veel Nederlandse boeken en kranten. Dus is lezen en schrijven nu een beetje makkelijk voor mij, maar luisteren en praten vind ik nog steeds moeilijk.

Paying for news, even to terrorists

The New York Times published a story, ‘Paying for News, It is Nothing New,’ listing a few examples of how the world’s major newspapers and other outlets paid handsome sums for interviews and other items to make big news stories.

‘It is a rare but sometimes a necessary evil,’ as the newspaper calls it, but does not say anything about the payments major media outlets may have paid to terrorist groups and commanders for news. There have been plenty reports about the reconstruction money for Afghanistan going into the hands of insurgent groups, but none of the mainstream media has ever published anything about how they pay the terrorists in search for big news. This was once a big business in Peshawar and the eastern and southern provinces of Afghanistan. Major media outlets paid huge sums to Taliban and Al Qaeda commanders to get their videos and news. This attracted many people to even making fake videos and interviewing fake Taliban and Al Qaeda commanders and fighters.

The impact was not that major newspapers and televisions only got news, they also supported and encouraged terrorism in many ways. I think this trend has increased in the recent years.

Afghanistan: a few photos

In Isteqlal Lyceum, Nangrahar: 2009. The children got laptops from the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) program. They were among the first children to get these laptops with content in local Pashto and Dari languages. I will never forget the excitement I saw on their faces that day.

Zarghoona High School, Kabul: August 2009. The school was a polling station for women in the fraudulent elections. An army of media reporters and cameramen were waiting for voters in the empty polling center. When these two women entered the school, they were bombarded with camera flashes and questions in many languages and their translations.

Bukhari, the wooden heater - very important in the winter. We had to give a three days training to our foreign colleagues how to use it.

A riverside Tea House in Kabul: 2010. Many shopkeepers and their guests in the bazaar along this river drink tea from this small shop. Afghans can survive without bread but not without green tea.

2010: War is evil and the Afghans have been suffering this evil for decades now. These people were displaced by fierce fighting in the southern Helmand province. They tell their stories of how they were ruthlessly killed by the insurgents and their houses bombed by the international forces. Their misery never stopped, it only reappeared in a different shape.

An IDPs (internally displaced people) camps in Kabul: 2010. Children are the biggest victim of war in Afghanistan. They grow up in a surrounding of killings, poverty, displacements and diseases. With no education and basic facilities, it is very easy to inject them the poison of religious extremism from a very early age. That is why you see the little girl in burqa.

When religion becomes so important, its codes are imposed without any concern of their negative effects on human beings. The unnecessary strictly imposed shuttlecock burqa has paralyzed women. Instead of walking to cross the border to Pakistan in Torkham, they have to be carried in these handcarts. Torkham: 2010

Torkham: 2010. Any one can get killed in wars and fighting. Men, women, children, young and old. But the wars in Afghanistan are mainly raised by men to get virgins in the paradise. The obsession with paradise have taken their ability to think away. So they care less that their children will die hungry or grow uneducated and their women will beg this way.

A pressure cooker bomb near the Ministry of Defense, Kabul: 2010. These bombs and suicide attacks are the main killers of civilians and government people in Afghanistan.

The poor man who was wearing this boot was out to earn bread for his children. He and many others were working on the road that morning when a suicide bomber struck two cars of Americans near the Darul Aman palace in Kabul. A few Americans as well as all the road workers were killed.

War is not the only problem in Afghanistan. There are many other problems. Violence against women is one of them. This poor woman, Nazia, who the Time magazine claims is called Aisha, is one of the thousands of Afghan women suffering the brutalities of insane tribal customs. Her husband cut off her nose and ears in Zabul province. She was also severely beaten. And it had happened on the eve of Eid-ul-Azha, the Eid of sacrifice. December 2007.

Tribal conflicts is yet another problem. The Hazaras have gathered in Mazari Square, near Kota Sangi in Kabul, to protest and form a strategy against the Kuchis. They have a long time conflict over some land but the government has never been able to find a practical solution. 2010.

However, this child does not care about all these wars and conflicts. He has to earn some money to support his family and is happy to sell the colored eggs in Qargha, a lake just a few kilometers from Kabul city and a place where people go for some refreshing in summer.

The same is true with these little girls. They are determined to go to school and complete their education, unaware that the ruthless terrorists are trying to poison them or throw acid on their faces. Several incidents of throwing acid on the faces of school going girls and poisoning them have occurred in many provinces. Burning schools and killing and threatening teachers happens nearly daily.

The bad guy has found a good host

Homa Sultani, member of the Afghan Parliament, has claimed Mullah Omar is her guest and lives in her home. This is not the first time she reveals her contacts with the one-eye fugitive Taliban leader. A few weeks ago she had claimed that Mullah Omar had given her a letter in which he had requested President Karzai to reconcile with him. The Taliban spokesmen have always rejected the claims of any negotiations; though the international media still reports that some peace talks are undergoing somewhere. Afghanistan’s opposition parties, particularly the one led by Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, have termed peace talks with Taliban as ‘unacceptable.’ President Karzai, however, has always invited Taliban for peace talks and his latest statement in this regard was a request to the Taliban to stop their fighting in respect of the holy Islamic month Ramadan.

‘At the moment Mullah Omar is in Afghanistan away from ISI and Pakistan. He is our guest and with us. His message is that he is ready and ready for reconciliation,’ the lawmaker from Ghazni province told the Parliament, according to local Afghan media. (See: Tolo News, Benawa.com [Pashto]).

It is hard to believe that the fugitive leader would hide in a female parliamentarian’s house in Ghazni, to be her guest. But unbelievable things always happen in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Bin Laden’s hiding place was also unbelievable. The account that Huma Sultani gives of her contacts with Mullah Omar suggest that the bad guy has fallen in love with her and has decided to leave Pakistan and reconcile with the government. Her love though does not seem strong enough to take him directly to the Parliament and tell them: ‘Look! I have brought him here. Hug him and finish the war.’

President Karzai has recently lost two of his most powerful and useful men in the south: his half-brother Ahmad Wali Karzai and his advisor Jan Muhammad Khan. Mullah Omar can prove a good replacement. But Huma Sultani claims the President does not want any reconciliation.

‘If more people get killed, the President and the government will be responsible because they are not interest in reconciliation,’ she told the Parliament.

Life in a refugee camp

Shalan Mama was one of those personalities in our refugee camp who never cared what other people thought or said about him. The camp was in Bajaur Agency, a tribal area bordering Afghanistan’s eastern Kunar province. Shalan Mama was not an Afghan refugee, as we were. His family had been internally displaced (though this term was not known then), not because of war but some kind of personal enmity. His house was not far from ours. He had nothing special that could make him known or famous, except his bull.

His bull was more important than Shalan Mama himself. We knew this because the bull was well cared after and his wife fed the bull better than him. Thus the bull was quite healthy and happy. The reason was that the bull had a ‘job.’

People from many near and far villages brought their cows and his bull impregnated them. It happened every day. Many of the refugees who did not go for jihad had nothing to do. Thus many gathered in that corner between the camp’s small bazaar and Shalan Mama’s house. There was a tree there which in the past belonged to someone else but Shalan Mama had bought it for about 250 rupees, the amount that his bull earned from impregnating 7 cows or in average 2 or 3 days.

When the first cow arrived, usually in the morning (every cow had to pass through the bazaar so everyone saw it and many people gathered), its owner tied it to the tree and then went to inform Shalan Mama. He brought his bull which came running to the first cow and jumped on it, finishing his job in a minute or two. Whenever Shalan Mama came with his bull, he threw an angry look at the onlookers and sometimes called them names. The onlookers were as used to his foul abuses as his bull to the countless cows.

When the second cow arrived, the bull did not come running; it walked slowly and peacefully. It jumped on the cow, not as forcefully as on the first one. And when the the third cow came, the bull was so tired and unwilling that Shalan Mama had to push it to jump on the cow. When the bull had jumped, it had difficulty to enter his penis. At that point Shalan Mama rushed behind it, held the bull’s penis in his hand and forced it inside the cow.

When Shalan Mama was not at home, his wife had to do this. She was more aggressive than her husband when dealing with the onlookers. That was because the onlookers had more fun when she was with the bull. At the point when she took the bull’s penis and forced it inside the cow, some mischievous boy would suddenly say: ‘It is not working. Maybe Shalan Mama is better than this bull. Poor bull!’ And hid behind someone or ran away. Shalan Mama’s wife always answered quickly, not caring if the mischievous boy was still there or not, because she looked at the onlookers in a way that showed her answer was for all of them: ‘Shalan Mama is fucking your mother, go and have a look,’ she yelled.

The cow-owners were often not satisfied when the job was done by Shalan Mama’s wife. They claimed their cow was not properly impregnated. She always told them: ‘I know better than you. If there is no result in a few months, come back, we will do it again.’

Freedom of violence is ok, freedom of speech is not

The Taliban punished those severely who opposed their violent regime during the years between 1996 and 2001. Opposition was not the only offence at that ‘Dark Age’ of the modern day Afghanistan, it was only one among many. Listening to music, photography, dance, and girls’ education were also among them.

The extremists now produce videos and magazines full of colorful photos and footages of which the main parts are frightening violence: beheadings, shootings, and kidnappings. On social media websites, such as facebook, twitter, and youtube, their active members who spread these videos and are busy to recruit youths and acquire funds always tell their followers and sympathizers that the advocates of freedom of speech don’t allow them to say what they want to say. By that they mean their violence full videos and statement full of threats and intimidation.

This is as false as their agenda. The fact is that if a man who can introduce himself as a Taliban spokesman or commander or just a fighter calls from an undisclosed place to any of the mainstream media – from New York Times, Washington Post, BBC, Voice of America, to the local Afghan radios, televisions and newspapers – and gives a message or a claim or a threat, it becomes a headline all over the world. And still they think they have no freedom of speech!

Many journalists and writers who went to dangerous areas to listen to what the insurgents wanted to say were killed and kidnapped by the same insurgents they wanted to listen to. Yet dozens of these journalists still go there and interview them, make documentaries and create romantic stories about them, and spread their violent agenda and threats, and yet they think they have no freedom of speech!

The BBC is particularly very good in making Taliban and other extremist groups popular patriotic organizations. Just throw a handwritten letter in a remote corner of the tribal areas threatening a school, the BBC, particularly its Urdu Service, will start making lengthy stories to tell the people how the letter was found, how scary the threat was, where the threatened school was located, who worked there, and how dangerous the network who wrote the letter was. This keeps on for several days, instilling fear in those who want to live in peace, and encouraging those who want to instill fear. The groups in Waziristan and Bajaur used BBC Urdu as a propaganda tool which worked better than the FM radio of Mullah Fazlullah in Swat.

BBC had quite a role in turning a few persons who could only write letters and threw them here and there into terrorist networks because the widespread coverage made them known everywhere and, as a result, people became afraid of them and started supporting them. And still they say they have no freedom of speech.

If The News of the World can be tried for hacking a phone calls, why all these other newspapers and media networks cannot be tried for helping and glorifying terrorists?

A few days ago I read an interview of a Western journalist on CNN who was presenting the situation in Afghanistan as if only Taliban and other insurgent groups were the true and patriotic Afghans and all others were just lay motherfuckers who had no right to live in the country. I don’t understand what these ‘journalists’ want to achieve by supporting barbarism and brutalities.

On the other hand, if a writer or journalist will write or say something against religious extremism, the media will never pay any attention because that is not ‘important.’ But if the same person is killed for what he has said or wrote, that is important for the media. And many will blame the victim for speaking out, not the killers for their crime. How unfortunate for the Afghans and all who are suffering under religious extremism!

The Afghan government, a few days ago, arrested 7 terrorists who crossed the border from Pakistan wearing burqas and hiding weapons and explosives underneath (shown in the photo).

Burqa has been the most popular ‘thing’ for jihadis since Afghanistan was ‘jihadized’ during the anti-Soviets jihad. The holy warriors have used every unholy and ugly method to make the most out of this thing. Women were forced to wear it mainly to keep them hidden from other men so nobody could see how many wives a jihadist had. Weapons and drugs were smuggled in burqas because a thin jihadist could pass as much weapons and drugs as he could carry under his burqa. And if they found themselves in danger, burqa came back to their rescue: just pull the thing over and go your way. The police often don’t check because it is ‘culturally sensitive.’

In Afghanistan, ‘cultural sensitivities’ are often not touched because it is believed the results will be sinister. Sinister? However, the reality is that the policy and approach of not touching them have made them ‘sensitivities’ and pushed the country into this mess.

Violence against women, selling and exchanging young girls, tribalism, illegal jirgas, violence against children, terrorism, burqa-ism, intolerance against minorities and non-muslims, widespread corruption, etc. are the culturally sensitive ‘things’ that should be touched and spoken against to reform the system and create a stable country and a progressive society.

Taliban propaganda tactics

"The latest sad news is that the Christian Crusaders (Americans) have burned a copy of the Holy Quran in Wardak province and have thus shown their enmity with Islam and the Muslims... The saddest aspect of this incident is that the American invaders have committed this heinous crime in a province (Wardak) that has been known for long as home to mujahedeen (the holy warriors). The people of this province have taken active part in past and current jihadi movements. The people of this province have always defended their country bravely and heroically. The people of this province had played a historical role in the war against British occupiers..."

The quote above comes from an article published in the latest issue of Shahamat (The Bravery), a Taliban propaganda magazine in Pashto -- a language spoken by the ethnic Pashtuns across Afghanistan and Pakistan, particularly the ungoverned tribal areas, now allegedly home to Al Qaeda, Taliban and other extremist networks of the region. The article is an example of how the Taliban's propaganda tactics exploit a particular incident or issue by elevating it with seemingly related background information to provoke the local people to stand up for violence.

This example as well as numerous other tactics using traditional and modern media and effectively exploiting the religious, social, political, and tribal ties worked very well for the Taliban-led insurgents during their eight year long insurgency in Afghanistan and Pakistan. They (propaganda tactics) enabled the extremist groups to attract wider local and international support in terms of heavy recruitment and financial help and undermine the authority of both the governments. This turned out to be a headache for the international community which has now launched a multi-pronged strategy of launching an all-out campaign by adding more troops, arming and supporting the Pashtun tribes to fight against the Taliban, and devising a reconciliation and reintegration plan to peel away some mid level insurgent commanders and foot soldiers. Following is a look inside the Afghan Taliban's successful propaganda tactics.

Mufti Latifullah Hakimi was the first full time and very active Taliban spokesman after the hardcore Islamic group fell from power and launched the bloody insurgency. When Pakistani security forces arrested him in October 2005, it was widely believed that this will significantly weaken the group's propaganda against US forces and the Afghan government, but the Taliban were very quick in appointing two more spokesmen, Qari Mohammad Yousuf Ahmadi and Dr. Mohammad Hanif, who did not allow the propaganda war to slow down. Before Hakimi, Ustad Mohammad Yasir acted as head of the Taliban's Information and Culture wing, but he was better known as a commander than a spokesman.

It is interesting that after coming into power in 1996 until their collapse in 2001, Taliban militants had banned all types of media except their propaganda Voice of Sharia radio and very few newspapers and magazines run under strict state control. The Supreme Leader, Mullah Omar, in his decrees had declared that using photographs and videos of human beings and animals was un-Islamic. But, after their collapse, when they re-organized their groups in Pakistan and the tribal areas and launched a guerilla war against the international forces and the Afghan government, they started using colorful magazines full of photographs of human beings and videos of fighting to reach out to the public in order to denounce the international presence in Afghanistan as 'occupiers' and the Afghan government as a 'puppet.'

Surprisingly, the Taliban fighters proved more capable and their efforts more strenuous than the international forces and the Afghan government in reaching out to the people and improving their propaganda tactics beside a successful guerilla war. Mufti Latifullah Hakimi first appeared on the scene on January 28, 2004 after a suicide attack killed a British soldier in Kabul. From January 2004 till the writing of this piece, the insurgents have not only successfully kept their voice raised and messages heard, but they were also able to establish advanced measures to widen their propaganda for more effective results on the international as well as local level.

Danish Karokhel, Director of the first internationally recognized independent news agency of Afghanistan, Pajhwok Afghan News, told me, "90 percent of the information that the Taliban provide to the media is false: when only one Afghan soldier gets killed in an attack, the insurgents call the media and claim that 10 foreign soldiers are killed. They are not responsible to anyone for their false claims and misinformation while, on the other side, the government and the international forces have many responsibilities and obligations and can't give false information." Yet, he emphasized on the need of a plan to counter the false propaganda of the Taliban.

Talking about a plan, I must refer to a New York Times report about a US mission against Taliban propaganda. The newspaper reported on August 15, 2009, that: "The Obama administration is establishing a new unit within the State Department for countering militant propaganda in Afghanistan and Pakistan, engaging more fully than ever in a war of words and ideas that it acknowledges the United States has been losing."

What happened to this plan? On the ground, there are no visible effects so far. When an official of the Ministry of Interior of Afghanistan was asked about this, he, on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to media, said: "I don't know if there is any such plan here. We have to make a plan for this purpose, but we need resources and technical support."

Formal spokesmen

Quoted in the media as "purported," the formal spokesmen of the Taliban insurgents are the most active and effective measure of the group's propaganda front. They are appointed by Mullah Omar through a formal decree or statement, delivered to the media by a top aide. This was not the case with Mufti Latifullah Hakimi, the first full time Taliban spokesman, but all the later spokesmen were appointed this way. After his arrest on October 4, 2005, the number of spokesmen was increased to two: one for their activities in the southern and western provinces (Kandahar, Zabul, Oruzgan, Helmand, Herat, Nimroz, Farah, Badghis, Ghor and Sar-e-Pul) and the other for eastern, central and northern provinces (Badakhshan, Baghlan, Balkh, Bamiyan, Daykundi, Faryab, Ghazni, Jowzjan, Kabul, Kapisa, Khost, Kunar, Kunduz, Laghman, Logar, Nangrahar, Nuristan, Paktia, Paktika, Panjsher, Parwan, Samangan, Takhar, and Wardak). Currently, Qari Mohammad Yousuf Ahmadi acts spokesman for the former provinces and Zabiullah Mujahid for the latter.

These spokesmen never provide regular and exact information about their fighters' casualties nor their attack tactics, operations, commanders' whereabouts and their own identities. But they are very fast in contacting local and international media for taking responsibility of attacks, claims of successes, formal statements, rejecting government officials' and international forces' claims, and other such issues. For this purpose, they call reporters, send them mobile messages, email them and some times even use faxes. Though they change their mobile numbers now and then to avoid being tracked, most of the time they keep them on to receive calls from media. At the same time, they post all their claims and statements on a number of websites in five different languages (Pashto, Dari, Arabic, Urdu, and English). Some times they even use internet forums for interaction and communication. Recently, members of a popular Pashto internet forum felt their presence was increasing. In fact, accessing a Taliban spokesman for information about incidents and issues is far much easier and useful for getting information than contacting a government or NATO/Coalition spokesman.

After the arrest of Mufti Hakimi and later on Dr. Hanif, which created problems for the insurgents in introducing their new spokesmen to the media, they are believed to have adopted a new tactic: never acknowledge the arrest or murder of the spokesmen; the new spokesmen should use the same old names. Hence, it is believed, even observed, that there are many Qari Yousufs and Zabiullah Mujahids.

But it is not limited to this point. Within the Taliban there are other groups who have their own spokesmen. For example, the Salafi (Wahhabi) Taliban in the eastern Kunar and Nuristan provinces, the Tora Bora Front in Nangrahar, and the Haqqani Network in the provinces bordering Waziristan (Khost, Paktia, Paktika) have their own spokesmen who contact the media on their own. Sometimes field commanders also contact the media for immediate effects of their attacks because they believe in the importance of a propaganda war. Gulbuddin Hekmatyar's Hizb-e-Islami, which associates himself and cooperates with the Taliban because of the "common enemy," has its own spokesman and it is observed, particularly in the case of major attacks, for example, the attack on French troops in Sarobi and the attack on a new year's celebrations in Kabul, that both Taliban's and Hekmatyar's spokesman claimed to have them carried out. Though he was member of the Taliban's leadership council, Mullah Dadullah, who was killed by the coalition forces in May 2007, had his own spokesman.

Propaganda at the village level

As the propaganda front through formal spokesmen is vital to undermine the government and reach out to the world, the propaganda campaign at the village level is important for recruiting youths and acquiring local support. Mosques are favorite places for the Taliban propagandists who always seek to convince the villagers that the international forces are fighting against Islam and it is their holy obligation to stand up for jihad. Quoting from different religious sources and fatwas (Islamic decrees), they describe the international sources as 'occupiers' and the Karzai government as their 'puppet' and tell the local population that providing them support at any level is an un-Islamic act, hence punishable by the 'holy warriors.'

In areas where the Taliban fighters don't have strong presence, they use night letters for propaganda purpose as well as for threatening local people. For example, if they want to close down a school, clinic, or suspect that a local elder or some villagers provide support to the 'occupiers' or the government, they throw warning night letters at a known place of the village, such as a mosque, school, clinic or the village center. Several such incidents have taken place in which the victims were warned beforehand through night or direct letters by the insurgents.

Internet Propaganda

Internet has proved the fastest and the most useful propaganda tool for the Taliban during these years. They have their own websites which are designed attractively and are full of all kinds of content such as news stories, statements, religious sermons, photos, videos, audio messages, guerilla war guidelines and training manuals. They update the websites regularly and post all these data in five languages: Pashto, Dari, Urdu, Arabic and English. When any of the websites gets closed by CIA or the coalition forces, they shift it to another server and put it online with a slightly different name. Al-emarah, Shahamat, and Tora-Bora are the main Taliban websites.

Email is another way of effective communication for the Taliban insurgents. Through email, they communicate with reporters, news agencies, newspapers, magazines, and radio and TV channels for taking responsibility of attacks and providing official statements and other information. Email interviews are also provided. Some times clarifications and statements about some issues are sent to Pashto websites through email.

Online internet forums and social networks are also used as part of this propaganda network. All the content posted on official websites is subsequently posted on Pashto and Dari forums for a wider audience and lengthy discussions. Videos are shared on youtube and other information on facebook, etc. As certain members of these online networks forward the videos and information to other groups and people, the propaganda content reaches to hundreds of thousands of people inside and outside Afghanistan and Pakistan and becomes part of the global campaign for jihad and, as a result, attract youths to join the insurgent forces or support it financially.

Traditional methods of propaganda

Traditional methods of propaganda include traditional print and electronic media -- newspapers, magazines, news agencies, books, radio channels, pamphlets etc. According to news reports, several times the Taliban established its Voice of Sharia radio which aired propaganda programs at least two hours a day and was listened to on both sides of the Pak-Afghan border from Waziristan to Khost and as far as Ghazni and Logar. There is so far no official Taliban newspaper (though there are two Hizb-e-Islami newspapers: Shahadat and Tanveer openly published and distributed in Peshawar and the adjacent areas) after the group fell from power in 2001, but many Pakistani newspapers volunteered to fill this vacuum. The Urdu media of Pakistan in particular has been observed as pro-Taliban. They publish the group's baseless claims with great exaggerations and pose them as heroes and liberators of Afghanistan in special editions and color pages. As Pakistan provides the main base for Taliban recruitment of fighters and suicide bombers, and majority of the target audience reads these newspapers, this propaganda helps it a great deal to achieve its goals in Afghanistan and the border areas. Readers of these newspapers, fed with romantic stories and exaggerations and untrue claims of the group's successes and achievements as well as lengthy articles about "brutalities against Muslims by the Americans," easily fall to the extremists and become very aggressive fighters.

The Taliban have several Pashto, Urdu and Arabic magazines openly published and distributed in Peshawar and the adjacent areas. These colorful magazines are often printed on expensive foreign paper and distributed free. They are published by different groups within the Taliban and are full of extremist propaganda, distorted facts, photos of victims, lengthy interviews with insurgent commanders, and articles on different political and religious topics. These magazines publish only news stories and newspaper articles that back their own claims.

The people behind these magazines also publish propaganda books and pamphlets. Most of these books are jihadi propaganda translated from Arabic and other languages into Pashto. But some times they publish books that provide information about bomb-making techniques. Two years ago, the Taliban published a book called 'Nizami Darsoona' (Military Courses) which was widely distributed in Peshawar and the tribal areas. The book provided information about making IEDs, suicide vests, and the use of different weapons.

But the most favorite of the young extremists are the fighting videos and cassettes of jihadi anthems openly sold in the tribal areas, Peshawar, Quetta, and other major cities in Pakistan. These videos consist of scenes of direct attacks on foreign forces and Afghan soldiers, scenes of beheadings of "American and Afghan spies," scenes from training camps, scenes from suicide attacks and testimonies of the suicide bombers, and speeches by well-known insurgent commanders.

Fatwas (decrees) by religious figures to wage jihad against the invaders and their supporters are also part of the insurgent propaganda. Due to lack of proper educational opportunities, majority of the people residing on both sides of the Durand Line believe in these fatwas and respect the clerics who issue them. The insurgents take advantage of people's ignorance and use the fatwas to achieve their goals. So far, they seem to have been succeeded in this.

Basis for propaganda

The post-2001 wave of terrorism and insurgency in Afghanistan has become a complicated issue. The motivation behind the Afghan insurgency is to defeat the international forces and overthrow the Karzai-led government while Pakistani Taliban and Al-Qaeda want to establish a caliphate or Islamic state in the region from where they could continue their agenda for global jihad. On the other hand, the elements within the Pakistani government which support the Afghan Taliban and in some cases Al-Qaeda too, seek their strategic depth in Afghanistan. There are other regional actors who have problems with the US presence in the region; hence they support the Taliban or other anti-US groups.

So the goal for the Afghan Taliban somewhat differs from the Pakistani Taliban and Al-Qaeda. The Afghan Taliban wants to put an end to the present system and take control of Afghanistan and eventually impose their strict Sharia laws. They receive support from the Pakistani Taliban and Al-Qaeda but they have their own strategy and tactics. They try to avoid killing civilians (but they still get killed), do not take responsibility for the suicide attacks and bomb blasts that result in civilian casualties, and often provide protection and financial incentives to the local population. They have their shadow ministers, governors, district chiefs, judges, and directorates. And they are told to act according to a detailed Layeha (code of conduct) issued by Mullah Omar. The Pakistani Taliban and Al-Qaeda, however, believe that killing anybody inside the borders of Afghanistan is a legitimate goal because, in their view, the country is occupied and the local people either should fight against the occupiers or be killed by the holy warriors.

However, the propaganda base for all of them is the same: they want to achieve their goals by all available means and propaganda is one among them. The main things that provide base for effective propaganda are using the history of wars between Christians and Muslims, using religious and cultural differences between the West and the East, the idea of the clash of civilizations, by denouncing the West as oppressive against Islam, by calling the War on Terror a War against Islam, by condemning the international forces as "occupiers and invaders," the government of Afghanistan as its puppet, and the reconstruction works as "efforts of Christianizing Afghanistan," by using civilian casualties of air strikes and using media reports of prisoners' abuses and mistreatment in their favor. In some cases, some people believe, that the insurgents and terrorists use brutal military tactics to use them in propaganda. For example, attacking the coalition forces from villages where villagers get killed in crossfire and then then using the killing of the same innocent villagers in the propaganda campaign.

All bad 'gods' in Afghanistan

We, four Afghan researchers, were in Delhi to participate in a conference. It was very expensive to make telephone calls from the five star hotel we were staying in, so we decided to buy Indian sim cards. In Afghanistan, you can buy a sim card from a boy on the street. But in Delhi it was quite a procedure. First we had to search for a shop which sold sim cards and once we were there, there were many forms to fill in, copies of passports and color photos were required, and the man in the shop as well as the mobile company had to confirm from the hotel. So we waited for hours.

The shop was full of every kind and shape of deities. I asked the man: ‘Do you also sell these deities?’

‘No, they are our gods. We have 34 thousand (or million?) gods. We have gods for everything,’ he said.

‘Which one is for mobile phones so I request him/her to finish this long procedure?’

He smiled, and said: ‘No, we don’t have a god for mobile phones yet.’ Then he asked me how many gods we had in Afghanistan.

‘Our country is smaller, so we have fewer of them. The biggest is called Karzai. He is the god of corruption. Then we have gods for terrorism, they are called Mullah Omar and Hekmatyar. Dostam is another god who mainly does mass-killings….’

He cut me, and said: ‘But they are all bad gods. Is there any good god in Afghanistan?’

I thought for a minute but could not think of any.

A Pashto newspaper in Peshawar had published a report of Reporters without Borders. ‘Without borders’ is translated ‘be sarhada’ in Pashto. But because of some typing mistakes or printing problems it was printed ‘be sara’ (without heads).

Above the front gate of a Karachi, Pakistan, girls school I saw this written, in 2002: ‘THE PENIS IS MIGHTIER THAN THE SWORD.’

From a Dubai hotel to the airport, I found that the taxi driver was a Pashtun, from Swat. At that time the Pakistan army had launched an operation against the Mullah Fazlullah militants and thousands of people were displaced. People were getting killed and schools were burned down every day. I said: ‘I hope your family is safe.’

‘Yes, our village is completely safe. That is the only village in Swat where there is no fighting and no killings.’

‘That sounds good but strange. Do you have a village lashkar (army) or something else for security?’

‘No,' the taxi driver said, 'actually there is no mosque and no mullahs in our village.'

Ramazan Bashardost was one of the candidates during the August 2009 presidential elections in Afghanistan. His name is written the same as the month of Ramadan in Dari and Pashto (also in Arabic and Urdu). The election results were not out yet but there were posters everywhere in Kabul with ‘Ramazan Mobarak’ (Happy Ramadan: the word ‘Mobarak’ is also used to say ‘congratulations in Pashto) to welcome the holy month of fasting. A British journalist, who could read some Dari and Pashto words, had written to his newspaper office that the election results were not out yet but it looked that Ramazan Bashardost had won the election because ‘there are posters on every wall of Kabul congratulating him.’

A friend of mine wanted to create a yahoo ID in Peshawar. His name was Abdul Salam. But there was already an ID with that name. He tried abdulsalamafghan, afghanabdulsalam, abdulsalam2010, and some others, but all were ‘not available.’ Finally he entered ‘son of donkey.’ The immediate response was: ‘Congratulations! Your ID is created.’
